Small screen stars invite public to save energy

14 February 2007

Soap stars from popular ITV programme Coronation Street are appealing to the public to get into the energy saving habit and ditch ordinary light bulbs.

The campaign to switch to more eco-friendly light bulbs has been launched by David Neilson and Julie Hesmondhalgh, who play Roy and Hayley Cropper.

According to the pair, who embarked upon the campaign in Miles Platting, at Manchester's Eco Show House; moving to more efficient lighting is a simple way of saving energy and cutting CO2 emissions, the Manchester Evening News reports.

"We can all do something to help preserve the planet while also saving a few bob into the bargain," said Mr Neilson.

The eco house has been created as an educational resource to increase awareness of the effects of global warming and was made by knocking two red-brick terraced houses together.

Along with a solar panel on the roof, the house also has double the recommended amount of insulation in its roof, while the wallpaper is also made to keep heat inside the house.
